Mapp retains World Cup crown

Corie Mapp won the Para Bobsleigh Overall World Cup crown for the second successive season on Saturday evening.
Mapp retained his title after finishing top of the standings after the campaign concluded following the seventh and eighth races of the season in Sigulda this weekend.
The 46-year-old ended the season with three gold, a silver and two bronze medals as he led the standings from start to finish.
Mapp finished the competition on 1605 points, 27 clear of Switzerland’s Jonas Frei and a further four in front of Austria’s Hermann Ellmauer in third as he made it a hat-trick of overall titles since beginning his bobsleigh career a decade ago.
A double amputee following injury while on active duty in Afghanistan in 2010, Mapp now has a half century of top tier medals to his name and can lay claim to being the best and most consistent para bobsledder in the world in 2018, 2024 and 2025.
He was unable to add to his medal tally in the individual races in Sigulda as he placed eighth on each occasion but the substantial lead he built after being on the podium in every single one of the six previous races in Lillehammer in mid January proved to be enough to secure the title in Latvia.
Next on the agenda are the World Championships - the one major title to have eluded Mapp so far. The showpiece event of the season takes place at the spiritual home of sliding in St Moritz on February 13th and 14th, with the former soldier having won bronze last year and in 2017 and silver in 2019.
