Top ten for Deen & co
Lamin Deen produced his best performance of the season so far to seal a top ten finish in the 4-man World Cup in Igls on Sunday afternoon.
Double Olympian Deen piloted Olly Butterworth, Ben Simons and the returning Toby Olubi to 10th place in Austria - his first top ten result on the sport’s premier circuit since January 2018.
Deen’s crew finished in a combined time of 1 minute 42.92 seconds, just 0.08 seconds behind the Czech Republic’s Dominik Dvorak in seventh.
Deen sat 11th at the halfway mark but jumped ahead of current 4-man World Championship silver medallist, Oskars Kibermanis, after the second run.
The result was a significant step forward for Deen, Butterworth and Simons, whose previous World Cup best this season was 13th in Winterberg at the turn of the year, and it was a strong return to the team for Olubi, who hadn’t raced for GB since the Whistler World Champs at the end of last season.
Fellow Brits Brad Hall, Taylor Lawrence, Luke Dawes and Greg Cackett finished 12th - the same spot they occupied at halfway - as they recorded a combined time of 1 minute 43.18 seconds.
The result saw them just miss out on a top ten spot for the first time this season just 24 hours after Hall and Cackett had won the country’s first 2-man World Cup for more than 30 years on the same track.
Germany’s Francesco Friedrich made it a golden double as he added 4-man success to yesterday’s 2-man triumph. Fellow German Johannes Lochner took silver, with America’s Hunter Church claiming his maiden World Cup medal in third.
Next up for the British crews is Race 6 of the World Cup season in Konigssee, Germany this coming weekend.
