Para World Champs cancelled
This month’s Para Bobsleigh World Championships have been cancelled as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak.
The showpiece event of the Para Bobsleigh season was scheduled to take place in Norway on March 24th and 25th.
Great Britain’s Corie Mapp was among the favourites for the global title after winning gold and silver on the World Cup circuit in Lillehammer in December.
Former soldier Mapp won overall World Cup silver last month and claimed the same colour medal at last year’s World Championships in Lake Placid.
Our international federation, the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF), have released the following statement:
“Due to the general situation with the Novel Coronavirus, the Norwegian authorities, in particular the Norges Handikapforbund and Sunnaasstiftelsen, have given clear recommendations to the Organizing Committee of the IBSF Para World Championships 2020 to cancel the event.
“The decision to cancel the event is fully supported by the IBSF as the health and welfare of the athletes and all other participants are of top priority and must be protected. The Para World Championships were supposed to be held from 20 – 25 March, 2020 in Lillehammer, Norway.
“The IBSF will coordinate with the Norwegian federation of Luge, Bob and Skeleton whether it will be possible to host the event in autumn this year.”
